When a dear friend asked me if I wanted anything from Paris, I think he was referring to a bag from LV or Hermès. Instead, I asked for a box of Ladurée macarons.

I didn’t quite understand what was all the fuss about when the macaron craze hit Malaysia. After all, my past macaron encounters here and in Europe have fell short of expectation. And it always seems a bit too sweet for my liking.

The first thing that hit me when I got my Ladurée is the packaging. The pastel green box with gold letterings is simple yet pretty.

It was love at first bite. These delightful pastries are crisp on the outside, and filled with smooth, creamy ganache. The shell-to-filling ratio is just perfect. Most of all, the flavors of the ingredients really shine through. Ladurée offers classic flavors like chocolate, raspberry, pistachio, vanilla and caramel. There are also seasonal flavors like lemon, praline, green apple and morello almond. My favourite – the raspberry.

I heard the macaron at Pierre Hermé is pretty good too. But I can’t say for sure until I’ve tried it. So, if anyone’s going to Paris, mind if I tumpang a box?
