If you’re in Melaka, do drop by Baba Charlie. This home-based nyonya kuih-maker started off selling their delicious kuih in pasar malam (night market) more than 20 years ago.
Baba Charlie offers a wide variety of nyonya kuih. Besides the usual onde-onde, kuih lapis and kuih talam, Baba Charlie has an extensive selection of peranakan kuih, some of which are quite hard to come by in KL. And they don’t skimp on the ingredients.
Their otak-otak is simply delicious.
The ang ku kuih is tasty, though I would have preferred the skin to be a bit thinner.
Lepat kacang - perfect for those who prefer something less sweet.
Tapai - definitely an acquired taste. The glutinous rice is soft, tangy and full of flavor.
Don’t forget to pick up the kuih kaya, durian apam balik & savoury yam cake as well.
Baba Charlie is about 10 minutes’ drive from Jonker Street. Give them a call before dropping by.
