A cheerful ‘hello’ greeted us when we first stepped into Tommy le Baker. It was the affable owner/baker, Tommy.

Having lived in France for many years where he honed his craft, he set up this bakery when he returned to Malaysia.

I was instantly attracted to these beautiful loaves of bread, and ordered a sourdough toast. The crumb was moist and dense, and slightly tangy. The crust – thin, crisp and caramelized brown.

Tommy likes eating the buttered sourdough toast with a sprinkle of sugar. And he’s right. It is yummy this way.

To support the local community, the bakery gets its supplies from the nearby provision shops. I like that.

The ingredients are substituted with local produce where possible. For his banana almond tart (RM6 per slice), Tommy substituted the pears in the original recipe with bananas. It’s scrumptious. I was told this is one of his most popular pastries.

The bakery specializes in bread made with long fermentation process. The bread are free of preservatives with no added sugar. It also serves pastries, a selection of sandwiches, quiches and the occasional soup (when time permits).

Now you know where I get my fix of artisan bread and pastries.
